Windsurf

From the surfboard to offshore racing

Windsurfing lies at the very core of Sofia Sail’s identity. Several of the club’s founders were passionate windsurfers long before they became offshore sailors and keelboat racers. It was through windsurfing that they first discovered the sea, the wind, the speed, and the sense of freedom that later shaped their entire approach to sailing and life on the water.

Over the years, some of them naturally transitioned toward sailboats, offshore sailing, and competitive racing, but the mindset developed through windsurfing never disappeared. The technical curiosity, constant equipment tuning, instinctive understanding of wind shifts, and appetite for challenge remained deeply embedded in the culture of the club.

This connection eventually evolved into a dedicated windsurf section within Sofia Sail, centered around coach and competitor Nikolai Nikolov. Around him, a new generation of young riders began to emerge, bringing fresh energy and strong competitive ambition.

Over the last two seasons, Sofia Sail athletes have increasingly appeared among the leading competitors in Bulgarian slalom, foil, and strapless events. Among the most notable recent achievements were Nikolai Nikolov’s podium finishes in Black Sea Cup events, together with several strong performances by the club’s younger riders across national competitions along the Bulgarian Black Sea coast.

One of the most important developments, however, is not measured only by medals and rankings. Around Sofia Sail, a genuine training environment and community has started to form — one where experienced sailors, windsurfers, engineers, and young athletes exchange knowledge, experiment with equipment, and push each other forward.

Today, the windsurf section of Sofia Sail represents much more than a competitive team. It is a natural continuation of the club’s broader philosophy — combining tradition with innovation, technical craftsmanship with athletic performance, and preserving the connection between Bulgaria’s classic sailing culture and the modern world of high-performance wind sports.
